It wouldn’t surprise you to hear that we live in a quick fix society. Unfortunately, it is also a fact that many people these days come to Christianity for just that. These people are soon in more despair when they find their expectations unmet. The goal of this post in to shine some light on just that.
How Our Own Expectations Cause Us Grief
Every bible story I heard growing up was filtered by pleasant outcomes and half stories like that of a Disney movie. Those stories are part of the reason I came to Christ at a young age. While I have no doubt of my salvation, it was only through the struggles of adulthood that true faith has flourished. As a teen I faced many difficulties that lead to crippling anxiety. This anxiety made it seem the only choices I had were poor choices. I didn’t get it. If God was real, why did I feel so alone. Riddled with disappointment, I started living as if God was a fictional character. Before I knew it, I was living as if I was my own savior and this lead to many bad outcomes.
Eventually, God let me come to the end of my rope. While I stood looking over the rubble of what life had become I could hear him calling me in a small whisper to look to him. God is not a Hollywood super hero. He loves us and is always there when we need him, but he lets us choose to seek him, then lets us also decide ourselves if we are going to trust him.
The truth is our expectation of the good life pales in comparison to the good life he promises us one day. Until that day, we WILL face a a daily battle. And with that, there will be troubles that will trigger the anxiety, but he tells us to call on him for strength. There is nothing we can do in our own strength to alleviate our anxiety. Our anxiety is a call to come to him.
Come and Be Held, He Wants to Amaze Us
He wants us to come to him and be held. He want us to be honest. He wants us to tell him what we need. In order to come to him and reap the benefits, one must come as humbly as a little child. If you come with any expectations, come knowing that he can do things for you that you can’t even begin to imagine or begin to do for yourself.
